Warmaster Revolution

A big focus for the founders of Painted Soldier is the Warmaster Revolution game system. Originally a Games Workshop epic-scale Warhammer game, it has been regenerated and refined by a passionate global community into what is now known as Warmaster Revolution. This evolution has enhanced balance, expanded army lists, and modernised the rules while staying true to the spirit of the original game. Warmaster Revolution is a very popular 10mm fantasy epic-themed system that captures the spectacle of massed battles, where entire armies manoeuvre across the tabletop in sweeping formations. It rewards strategic thinking, command control, and careful positioning rather than just individual unit power. The smaller scale allows hobbyists to create visually stunning armies and immersive battlefields that feel truly grand in scope. For Painted Soldier, this system represents the perfect blend of nostalgia, community collaboration, and visual storytelling. It is a cornerstone of what we aim to showcase—beautifully painted armies, cinematic engagements, and shared knowledge that helps both new and experienced players get the most out of the hobby.

Competent Wargamer

One of our community members, Phil Brewer, has developed the Competent Wargamer initiative to support the community in establishing structured events and competitions. This approach brings an additional layer of challenge to the hobby for those who enjoy testing their skills, while still maintaining the collaborative and social spirit that defines wargaming. Competent Wargamer focuses on creating fair, balanced, and engaging environments where players can come together to share experiences, refine their understanding of rules systems, and explore different interpretations of gameplay. It encourages thoughtful army building, tactical play, and consistency in rules application, helping to elevate standards across events. Importantly, it is not just about winning—it is about community. Events driven by this initiative provide opportunities for hobbyists to connect, exchange ideas, and celebrate the broader aspects of wargaming, from painting and modelling to scenario design. It represents a structured yet inclusive way for players to deepen their engagement with the hobby.

Bolt Action

A fantastic World War II-themed game from Warlord Games at 28mm scale, Bolt Action brings the battles of the Second World War to life with a focus on platoon-level engagements. The system supports a wide range of forces and theatres, allowing players to recreate historical encounters or develop their own narrative-driven scenarios. It is a popular and exciting game system within our community, known for its accessible rules, tactical depth, and cinematic gameplay. Bolt Action strikes a strong balance between competitive play and casual gaming, making it appealing to a broad range of hobbyists. The scale also lends itself to highly detailed miniatures and terrain, enabling the creation of incredibly immersive and visually striking gaming tables. The universe has recently been expanded with Konflikt ‘47, introducing a bold and imaginative twist by blending World War II with science fiction and alternate history elements. This adds a fresh and fun dimension to the genre, opening up new creative opportunities for modelling, storytelling, and gameplay. At Painted Soldier, Bolt Action and its extended universe exemplify the diversity of the hobby—whether you’re drawn to historical accuracy, competitive play, or imaginative reinterpretation, it offers something for everyone.

Lee Hunt MBE

Founder, Terrain Builder, Warmaster General
Lee is the founder of Painted Soldier and a lifelong wargamer whose journey into the hobby began in 1983. Over the decades, he has explored a wide range of game systems, but his enduring passion lies with Warmaster Revolution, where the spectacle of “little wars” truly comes to life. He has a particular appreciation for smaller scales, enjoying the ability to recreate vast battles in a visually striking and immersive way—though, like most hobbyists, he is always ready to dive into the next new and exciting system.
Lee’s strength within the hobby lies in creativity. He has a keen eye for building thematic terrain and gaming boards that elevate a game beyond mechanics into something cinematic and atmospheric. For Lee, it’s not just about playing—it’s about creating an experience.
A long-time friend of Steve, Lee has been gaming with him since their teenage years, with their shared passion continuing through their military careers. He also introduced his son, Sam, to the hobby at an early age, helping to shape the next generation of Painted Soldier.

Steve Lille

Rules Master, Strategist, Community Architect
Steve brings over 40 years of wargaming experience and is one of the key minds behind the ideology of Painted Soldier. A highly experienced and versatile gamer, he has a passion for exploring a wide range of rule systems, from tabletop wargames to board games, always seeking to understand the mechanics in depth.
Where Lee creates the battlefield, Steve masters it. His ability to quickly learn, interpret, and refine rules systems makes him an invaluable counterpart, ensuring that games are not only thematic but also balanced and engaging. Together, Lee and Steve form a natural partnership—blending creativity with precision.
Having gamed together since their youth, their shared history and continued collaboration have helped shape both their approach to the hobby and the vision behind Painted Soldier. Alongside Lee and Sam, Steve also shares a strong passion for painting miniatures, bringing character and life to every army he fields.

Sam Hunt

Airborne Gamer, Painter, Next Generation
Sam represents the next generation of Painted Soldier. Introduced to the hobby in the 1990s by his father, Lee, he grew up immersed in systems such as Warhammer 40K and The Lord of the Rings—games he later encouraged both Lee and Steve to embrace.
Now serving in the Army, Sam brings a distinct flavour to the hobby, with a particular passion for airborne forces. His enthusiasm for these elite troops is reflected in his gaming style—bold, aggressive, and full of character. Whether it’s launching daring assaults or taking on seemingly impossible odds, such as engaging Tigers with a PIAT in Flames of War, Sam plays with a sense of narrative that often turns games into legendary moments.
An excellent painter in his own right, Sam also shares the family passion for creating immersive, thematic tabletops that bring each game to life. His blend of modern gaming influences and military experience adds a unique dimension to the Painted Soldier community.

We’re Doing Our Part to Grow the Community

Our aim is simple—to support the continued growth of the wargaming hobby. Through Painted Soldier, we share our experiences, skills, and knowledge, while creating a space where others can do the same. This is not about one voice or one system; it’s about bringing together a wide range of perspectives from across the hobby.

Our vision is to create opportunities through engagement—encouraging discussion, sharing opinions, and shining a light on areas of the hobby that might otherwise be overlooked. Whether it’s a niche ruleset, an emerging game, a new way of building terrain, or a fresh approach to painting, we want to help surface and celebrate it.

We see ourselves as facilitators of the hobby. Through the site, we will introduce new ideas, highlight developing areas, and share updates on events, projects, and community activity. At the same time, we remain rooted in what makes the hobby special—creativity, collaboration, and the enjoyment of bringing tabletop worlds to life.

Painted Soldier is built for the community, and it grows with the community.
